Class Description

This is a 12-hour course by attending a 2-hour class once a week for a total of 6 weeks. The program is designed to help those who are involved in a verbal or physical altercation or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation or between family members. Participants taking this class will learn to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries while recognizing the many ways in which themselves and other relationships were affected. Students’ cognitive distortions will be challenged to create healthy relational behaviors. They will learn to identify who are the victims and their rights and responsibilities, become familiar with the three models of relationships and identify their pattern of abuse and learn how to manage their behavior. Participants will recognize their triggers and identify coping skills to reinforce new and effective ways to de-escalate and engage in pro-social behaviors and increasing victim empathy awareness. This program will assist the client in completing a victim impact statement and a plan to identify personal change that promotes building safe and respectful relationships in the future.

All of our instructors are trained in components of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Social Learning Theory. Research supports Cognitive Behavioral treatment methods as one of the most effective in creating emotional and behavioral change in the shortest amount of time while also being exceptionally well suited for educational group formats. The group works through curriculum within a group-dialogue process, focusing on personal accountability.
